In a sign that the end is near, TLC is rumored to be wrapping up production on Mary Kate and Ashley: Together Again, a reality series about surgically rejoining the famous Olsen twins. The once-beloved stars of Full House are attempting to stop their professional skid, by parlaying the success of TLC’s current reality show about conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel.
Filmed at an exclusive resort in Park City, Utah, Together Again juxtaposes the slide of the Olsen twins against the meteoric rise of the Hensel twins. Showing how far the Olsen twins have slid since the days of Young Artist Awards and a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, the reality series features the foreclosure of the California mansion owned by the twins’ father. Industry insider Jon Arnot explains, “Drug addictions, sex tapes, DUIs – that’s all to be expected. But, when a child star no longer is able to support the parents, that’s rock bottom.”
The Olsens’ plan takes root as the twins watch an episode of Abby and Brittany. Ashley states, “We’re way cuter than them.” And Mary Kate responds, “Way.” In apparent jest, Ashley suggests the twins should be rejoined. “But not at the neck like them,” Mary Kate responds. “That would suck.”
Showing their design skills, the twins sketch composites of their bodies joined at various points, such as the back, the belly, and the forehead, before ultimately picking the thigh. As it no doubt is intended to do, the decision draws controversy. On one hand, medical ethicists, buffet owners, and the clergy decry the procedure. On the other, local snowboarders and the Hensels argue the Olsens do not go far enough. Brittany Hensel says, “The thigh? Really? That’s not conjoined. That’s a sack race.” Abby corrects, “She means a 3-legged race. Try sharing a stomach; then, we’ll talk.”
Shortly after the girls undergo the surgical procedure, an episode features the girls shopping in Park City, attracting stares and repeatedly encountering stores that do not carry women’s pants with three leg holes. Mary Kate says, “I’m not sure the world is ready for us.” A knowing smile flickers across Ashley’s face.
