No Utah resident has done more to empower or propel female filmmakers forward than Taunya Gren--founder of Utah Women in Film.
The following is her most recent plea:
"I'm struck yet again by the huge imbalance of audition calls for female characters compared to the call for male roles. Every ad posted this week are calls for male characters ranging in age from 20 to 50 or 60, exhibiting depth and command. Female character calls are for 20 year old trophies to play alongside their 50 or 60 year-old male counterparts. If that isn't depthless and sexist enough, the female characters perpetually portrayed are one dimensional stereotypes.
The only way to change the industry ethos is if women start writing and write stories which represent their real selves--not as mere objectified, trophy bitches to be had, but as substantive women, interesting, contrary and complex in nature."
