My kids grew up watching Ingmar Bergman's beautiful 1975 Swedish version of the Mozart opera The Magic Flute on VHS. They watched until our copy became wobbly and warbly, over and over. They didn't know from opera, but loved the three little boy angel/muses, the wicked queen, the funky rolling sets, and the great songs and arias.
This week and next, Utah Opera is staging The Magic Flute, a good "starter opera" if you want to try your hand at the genre and you're a newbie. Take advantage of discount student and youth tickets, or tickets priced for an under 30 years-old budget.
