In a moment of high irony, Oscar-nominated Palestinian film maker Emad Burnat was detained yesterday at LAX and threatened with deportation on his way to the Academy awards.
After being released, Burnat issued this statement: "Although this was an unpleasant experience, this is a daily occurrence for Palestinians, every single day, throughout [t]he West Bank. There are more than 500 Israeli checkpoints, roadblocks, and other barriers to movement across our land, and not a single one of us has been spared the experience that my family and I experienced yesterday. Ours was a very minor example of what my people face every day."
5 Broken Cameras explores issues of occupation and human rights in depth, and in a most compelling way. My review from '12 is here, and hopefully after the awards, the film will be in wide release and can be screened by a larger audience. 5 Broken Cameras is currently available on Netflix.
